TAHOE CITY, Calif. — The North Tahoe boys soccer team defeated its first two opponents in the Northern 3A Regional Playoffs this past Thursday and Friday at Lowry High School in Winnemucca to clinch a berth in the state tournament this weekend in Las Vegas.

North Tahoe first faced West Wendover on Thursday in the quarterfinals, earning a 4-2 victory.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, North Tahoe quickly tied the game with a goal by Juan Pablo Herrera.

Just before the break, senior defender Ross Tester crossed the ball from the left flank. It passed out of reach of the goalie, where junior striker Carlos Preciado headed it down into the right side of the goal, giving the Lakers a 2-1 lead at halftime.

In the second half, North Tahoe found generous amounts of room on touches by their midfielders Austin Carr, Jesus Ortega, Paulino Tapia and Juan Pablo Herrera.

Two goals by senior captain Carr took the Lakers to a 4-1 lead. The first came from a precise give-and-go with Jesus Ortega heeling it back toward Carr, who finished it by rocketing it into the top of the goal. The second came moments later on a powerful put-a-way into the right side of the net by Carr.
