Preppin’ for prep season

Sylas Wright

The Northern 3A girls golf schedule is not summer vacation friendly. The hardly ready Wolverines will head to Lowry High School in Winnemucca Thursday for one of two tournaments before the first day of school.”I haven’t played all summer,” senior team member Ally Carroll said, conceding that she recently returned from a snowboard camp at Mount Hood, Ore. “I think we need to come out and practice more. We have a tournament in a couple days and we’re not really ready.”Carroll and teammates Renee Cardinali, Emily Adams and Sage Johnson were tuning their strokes at Northstar’s driving range on Monday. The other half dozen golfers who make up the 2005 Truckee girls golf team were still off enjoying their summer vacations.”We’ll probably get more kids out once school starts,” said 12-year girls golf coach Mike Merriman, referring mainly to freshmen not aware that the season begins before school does.As of now, Merriman said, there are nine players on the team, and five or six core players will travel to compete in the tournaments. The core players thus far, Merriman said, are Cardinali and Carroll, Jennifer Womack, Emma Shaffer and Kim Snyder – all of whom are seniors.”After that, I’m not sure,” Merriman said. “One of them (Rachel Hines) is still on vacation until another couple weeks.”Cardinali, the team’s undisputed No. 1 golfer and, according to Merriman, probably the best player in 3A, spent the summer preparing for her senior season by taking golf lessons in Sparks and working with her father on her game. “Over the summer I’ve been working real hard on (golf),” Cardinali said. “I learn more every year … I want to try to get a scholarship to a good school with a good golf team, to open up opportunities.”Womack was the No. 2 golfer on the team last season, Merriman said, and he believes she will be again. Carroll thinks so, too.”It’s kind of early to tell,” Carroll said, “but I think Renee (Cardinali) and Jen (Womack) will dominate the team, probably … I’ll know a whole lot more after Thursday’s tournament. But I think we’re good enough to make it to state.”Truckee’s girls golf team has earned a shot at the state tournament three years running, but has not taken the title since repeating in 1999 and 2000.”I want to make it to state and finish in the top five, at least,” Cardinali said. “It’ll be tough, but if we get everything together we’ll have a chance.”
