Ralph Backstrom led the North Shore contingent with a third-place finish in the finals of The North Face Masters of Snowboarding at Kirkwood Mountain Resort this past Sunday.

Aaron Robinson, who claims Big Mountain, Mont., as his home resort, won the menand#8217;s competition, while Shannon Yates of Snowbird, Utah, captured the top spot in the womenand#8217;s field.

The start area for the competition clung precariously to the shoulder of a cliff in Kirkwoodand#8217;s notorious Cirque. On Day 1 ridge gusts whipped snow and competitors relentlessly as every other high-elevation chairlift at the resort got socked in and shut down. That dayand#8217;s storm brought more than 2 feet of snow and set things up for a huge finale Sunday.

Squaw Valley snowboarders have made their presence felt throughout the three-event series, which swung through Snowbird and Crystal Mountain, Wash., before wrapping up at Kirkwood.

Squawand#8217;s Ross Baker took seventh overall at Kirkwood, while fellow Squaw riders Tyler Douglas finished ninth and Christopher Galvin 23rd. Truckeeand#8217;s Andy Finch, who rides for Northstar, placed 12th and Dylan Thompson of Alpine Meadows was 15th.

In the womenand#8217;s competition, Squaw Valley snowboarder Christy Deysher took sixth, while Squawand#8217;s Iris Lazzareschi was 14th.
