Sahlberg, Marple honored
October 2, 2006
Truckee High junior Keven Sahlberg and North Tahoe junior Brent Marple are the Sierra Suns Athletes of the Week from Sept. 25-29. A shifty halfback and special teams return man, Sahlberg led the Wolverines in scoring at Lowry on Friday with three touchdowns on runs of 21, 14 and 44 yards. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound junior also ran for 87 yards on just five carries, averaging more than 17 yards per touch, and caught one pass for 62 yards in the 43-6 league win. Sahlberg, also a defensive back when needed, is a threat to score from anywhere on the field whenever he touches the ball. Marple stepped up in a big way in North Tahoes homecoming football game against Whittell on Saturday. Marple filled in for injured starting quarterback Ryan Blount and led the Lakers to a 210 victory over the Warriors, bumping North Tahoes record to 1-5. Not only did Marple take the snaps including ramming in a goal-line touchdown and sneaking around for the two-point conversion he also busted out numerous holes blocking for running back Ernesto Mendoza and completed 1 of 3 passes for 27 yards. On defense, Marple was all over the field, tallying a goal-line interception for a 31-yard return, batting down three passes and recording three solo tackles and two assists.
