Lake Tahoe Open Water Swim



Big Blue Adventure is putting on the inaugural Lake Tahoe Open Water Swim from the shore of Sugar Pine State Park on Sunday, Aug. 8. The event includes a 1/2-mile, 1-mile and 2-mile swim set up off the beach of the Ehrman Mansion, where spectators can watch the action first hand from the pier. Prices range from $25 to $55. Event officials are looking for kayak volunteers to assist in water safety. Volunteers earn $10 an hour of racing credit to use towards any future Big Blue Adventure event, which range from triathlons, adventure races and trail races. Disc golf course opens at Squaw



Squaw Valley USA announced the opening of its new 18-hole mountaintop disc golf course. Disc golfers can ride the Cable Car to High Camp to play free of charge. The course will be open from 10:40 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily until Aug. 22, and then from 10:40 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sept. 6. Holes 1, 2 and 18 are located directly behind the High Camp complex, forming a beginner loop for those looking to get a feel for the game. For more advanced players, holes 3 through 17 offer more extreme disc golfing.

Ladies Race Night at Northstar

Join the Tahoe LUNA Chix at the Northstar Resort Cross Country Mountain Bike Race Series on Thursday, Aug. 19 for a fun mountain bike race to benefit the Breast Cancer Fund. No experience is necessary. Racers can choose from three categories and#8212; beginner, novice or expert. Entry fee is $15 and all proceeds from women entrants on Aug. 19 will go directly to the Breast Cancer Fund. Race registration is from 5-5:45 p.m. Racing begins at 6 p.m. sharp. Entry fee includes a raffle ticket for a chance to win prizes, including LUNA Sport bike jerseys. The Tahoe LUNA Chix will also be hosting a free pre-race bike maintenance clinic at 4:30 p.m. at Plaza Bikes in the Village at Northstar. For more information, visit http://www.teamlunachix.com.

Truckee football fundraiser

The Truckee High football team is selling community cards with local merchant discounts for $20 apiece to raise funds for its program. Look for the Truckee players selling the cards and wearing red this summer.

Trail Running Group

Maximize training time with specific workouts in group setting with instructor Julie Young, owner of o2fitness. Learn valuable injury prevention exercises while achieving efficient biomechanical stride via drills. Weekly workouts progress to train physiological and neuromuscular systems, starting with specific strength, technique intervals, power and speed, and progressing to tempo and lactate threshold intervals. All abilities are encouraged to join. Training takes place from 7-8 a.m. Tuesdays, in six-week sessions. Cost is $100 per six-week session.
