Squaw Mountain Run set for Saturday

Sun Staff reports

Registration is still available for the 28th annual Squaw Mountain Run, which kicks off Saturday at 9 a.m.

Participants may sign up Saturday between 7 and 8 a.m. or stop by Squaw Valley today between 4 and 7 p.m. Registration also is available online at http://www.active.com.

Cost on Friday is $30 for adults and $15 for those who are 21 and younger, while prices rise to $40 and $25 on race day. The event is a fundraiser for the Auburn Ski Club Junior Nordic Ski Teams and the Tahoe Forest Hospital Cancer Center.

Sally Jones, Nordic program director with Auburn Ski Club Associates, said numbers were on par with past events as of Thursday, when about 200 had pre-registered. She expects about 500 to sign up by the start of the run.

Beginning at the base of Squaw Valley at 6,200 feet, runners and walkers climb 2,000 feet in 3.6 miles to High Camp. Once there, they are greeted with awards, raffles, music, refreshments and beer.

The less energetic may take the cable car to the top to take part in a three-mile flower walk.
