Squaw Valley named best North American ski resort in USA Today poll

Recognized around the world as the host of the 1960 Winter Olympics, Squaw Valley “has only gotten better since,” according to USA Today.

OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. — According to MapsofWorld.com, there are 644 ski resorts in the United States and Canada.

According to a readers' poll conducted by USA Today, the North American ski resort that stands above the rest resides at North Lake Tahoe.

Out of the 20 downhill resorts recently nominated by a panel of pro skiers and snowboarders, USA Today and 10Best announced last week their readers selected Squaw Valley as the winner of the 2016 "Best Ski Resort."

"Our team is thrilled to be recognized as the USA Today and 10Best Readers' Choice winner for 'Best Ski Resort' and we are overjoyed to share this award with the entire Reno-Tahoe community, which works together to provide an award-worthy experience for our guests," said Andy Wirth, president and chief executive officer of Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows. "Truly, this designation belongs to the community: the people in the businesses of Truckee, Tahoe City, all of North Lake Tahoe and the entire region.

"We send sincere thanks to our loyal guests for their proud support."

Touting 3,600 skiable acres, including 16 bowls, more than 170 trails and 29 lifts, Squaw Valley's terrain is tailor-made for not only extreme skiers and riders, but also beginners and intermediates.

Additionally, the resort boasts an annual average of 450 inches of snowfall and 300 sunny days.

And this ski season, thanks to the influence of El Niño, Squaw Valley is well ahead of the snowfall curve.

"With more than 24 feet of snow so far this season and more to come," Wirth said, prior to this week's 2-feet storm, "we've been able to offer outstanding mountain conditions across the resort's terrain, plus a variety of activities, special events, and an unparalleled village vibe that combine to offer the best winter resort experience in North America."

In compiling the list of 20 nominees to be considered for the "Best Ski Resort" title, USA Today solicited feedback from pro skier Caroline Gleich, U.S. Ski Team member Abby Ghent, and two-time Olympians Megan McJames (alpine skiing) and Elena Hight (snowboarding).

Finishing second to Squaw Valley was Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah. Visit 10best.com/awards/travel/best-ski-resort to see the full list.
