Sugar Bowl’s Halvorsen posts ninth-place finish on day one of junior national championships

Sugar Bowl Academy skier Haydn Halvorsen and several other local athletes hit the snow earlier in the week at the Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Heber, Utah, for the US Ski & Snowboard Junior National Cross-Country Championships.
The competition started on Tuesday, March 6 with the 5- and 10-kilometer classic cross-country race, and several Truckee-Tahoe area skiers put together impressive showings against deep fields of competitors.
Halvorsen, who was this year’s high school state champion, posted the best result of the area's athletes with a ninth-place finish against a field of 89 racers in the boys' junior 16–17 division. The Sugar Bowl skier completed the 10-kilometer course with a time of 24 minutes, 50.90 seconds, and was 1:49.40 behind race winner Ben Ogden, of Stratton, Vt.
Auburn Ski Club's JC Schoonmaker finished shortly after with a time of 25:03.00 for a 15th-place finish. Teammate Cooper Anderson was the next fastest local with a time of 26:54.50. Sugar Bowl's Nate Cutler was next with a time of 27:45.90. Auburn Ski Club racers Maxwell Roske (29:20.20), and Nikolas Burkhart (29:56.50) also competed.
Auburn Ski Club's Phoenix Sanchez led local efforts in the junior boys' 14- and 15-year-old division with a time of 15:41.70 for 43rd place in the 5-kilometer race . Teammate Etienne Bordes was right behind Sanchez with a time of 15:41.90. Sugar Bowl's Bjorn Halvorsen was the next fastest local with a time of 15:48.60. Auburn Ski Club's Cooper Honeywell (16:52.10), and Thomas Hipsley (17:49.30) also raced.
In girls' racing, Sugar Bowl's Eleanore Hamilton took 27th in the junior 18-19 division's 5-kilometer race with a time of 18:53.90. Auburn Ski Club's Abbie Baier (19:56.60) also raced.

In the 16- and 17-year-old division, Sugar Bowl's Sofia Sanchez led the local racers with a time of 17:32.80 for 45th place. Teammate Kianna Mullings (17:45.20) was next. Auburn Ski Club's Camille Syben (18:35.90) and Sugar Bowl's Sami Samuels (22:46.10) also raced.
In the girls' 14-15 division, Auburn Ski Club's Lily Murnane posted the top time for a local, crossing the line in 18:53.60 for 50th place. Teammates Lili Lehmkuhl (19:13.70), Alani Powell (19:17.50), and Mera Schoonmaker (20:09.90) were next, followed by Sugar Bowl skiers Frances Hamilton (20:32.90), and Samantha Swan (21:05.20).
Racing will continue throughout the week.
