Tahoe adventure racing: Arevalo, Adams win 36th Squaw Mountain Run

JP Donovan is no stranger to scaling Squaw Mountain faster than most.

The Incline Village triathlete and trail runner has not only won the annual Squaw Mountain Run three times, his winning-time of 28 minutes, 50.2 seconds in 2012 remains one-tenth of a second off the modern course record.

"I just go out and do races and I'll try to win," said Donovan, a graduate of Incline High School. "And if people aren't prepared, I'll win."

Donovan nearly added to his winnings Saturday but couldn't keep up with a few well-prepared runners, finishing fourth with a time of 30:22.3 at the 36th annual Squaw Mountain Run Saturday.

Claiming first place in a field of more than 300 competitors was Chico's Arturo Arevalo, who clocked in at 29:05.6.

"I tried to challenge the guy who won early on in the race and he just ran really strong," Donovan said. "None of us could really catch him before he was able to get the finish. I thought he ran really well. He had good form and seemed to know what he was doing."

Donovan said the biggest key throughout the Squaw Mountain Run — a 3.6-mile uphill race from the base of Squaw Valley Ski Resort to High Camp, which boasts an elevation of 8,200 feet — is effectively changing your pace on the different grades of mountain.

"Depending on how you decided to race up it, you should change your pace with the grade changes," he said.

Tobias Albrigtsen, a recent transplant to Tahoe City from Boulder, Colo., captured second place with a time of 29:45.9. Sonoma's Nick Spector took third at 30:22.3.

Lindsey Adams of Gardnerville raced to victory in the women's field while placing 15th overall with a time of 36.21. Elisak Albrigtsen, the wife of Tobias Albrigtsen, trailed in second at 39.00.4.

The top Truckee finisher was 17-year-old Hudson Lesbeck who won the U18 division while taking seventh overall in a time of 34:13.5. On his heels was Truckee's Spencer Eusden, who finished eighth at 34:20.

On the women's side, Truckee's Lenka Sterling finished third with a time of 39:31.8. Two spots behind in fifth place was Truckee's Holly Sherrer, who crossed the finish line at 41:57.4.
