Tahoe Junior Freeride Series swings through Alpine Meadows

More than 165 youth skiers and snowboarders competed in the second stop on the Tahoe Junior Freeride Series at Alpine Meadows this past weekend.

The three-day contest took place in sunny, spring-like conditions on Poma Rocks off the Kangaroo chair.

Fresh off his third-place finish in the Freeride Junior World Championships in Grandvalira, Andorra, Xander Guldman of the Sugar Bowl Freeride team topped a field of 44 athletes in the men's 15-18 ski division. Guldman received a high score of 72.467 between his two runs.

He was followed by Cody Atwood of the Squaw Valley Big Mountain Team, with a 69.867, and Cooper Davis of Sugar Bowl Freeride, with a 69.200.

Mia Winans of Squaw Free, who also competed in Junior Worlds, placed first among 19 athletes in the women's 15-18 ski division with a high score of 66.700. Sugar Bowl Freeride's Sydney Gradeff and Hallie Conyers-Tucker finished second and third with scores of 66.567 and 65.433, respectively.

The boys 11-14 ski division featured the most competitors, with 62 athletes. Squaw Free's Tanner Halberstadt took the win over Turner Drummond of the Alpine Big Mountain team and Jonny Lee of Squaw Free. He posted a score of 68.633, while Drummond came in at 68.467 and Lee at 67.566.

Ava Seelenfreund, a member of the Squaw Valley Big Mountain Team, finished atop a field of 29 athletes in the girls 11-14 ski division. She received a score of 65.900, which placed her ahead of Squaw Free members Lily Bradley (63.966) and Chloe Nicolaou (63.666).

Five riders on the Squaw Alpine Snowboard Team made up the 15-18 snowboard division. Andrew Kraatz earned a 60.900 to take the win. Dylan Zellers, who finished fourth at Junior Worlds, was second (69.867), and Jackson Skaff rounded out the top three (49.600).

Nine athletes competed in the 11-14 snowboard division, with Squaw Alpine Snowboard Team riders sweeping the top three — Nathan Bromley in first (63.300), George Skaff second (62.300) and Patrick Gulini third (55.833).
