Tahoe Trail Running Series under way

Noah Brautigam raced to a first-place finish in the inaugural Run to Squaw race this past Sunday, June 26, while Kristin Walstad took first place on the women’s side.

The 7.9-mile run began at Commons Beach in Tahoe City and followed the Truckee River to a short, moderate climb up to the finish at the Village at Squaw Valley. The event was part of the eight-race Tahoe Trail Running Series put on by Big Blue Adventure.

A total of 71 people took part in the run, with the 22-year-old Brautigam establishing the winning time in 45 minutes and 2 seconds. Chris Badolato, 34, finished runner-up less than 20 seconds behind, posting a time of 45:19, while Rob Hammes rounded out the top three in 47:11.

Walstad captured the win in the women’s division and took fourth overall with a time of 48:27. She was trailed by Regina Curry, who was the second women and ninth-place finisher overall in 53:10. Gayle White (54:13), Andrea Fisher (54:33) and Angela Matthews (55:08) finished in succession in third through fifth place among women, and 12th through 14th overall.

Eighteen runners recorded times under an hour, with Chris Barber taking fifth, Doniel Kaye sixth, Dan Foehner seventh, Turi Becker eighth, and Jason Reed rounding out the top 10.

Next up in the Tahoe Trail Running Series is the inaugural Truckee Running Festival, scheduled for Saturday, July 2 at River View Sports Park.

The festival’s 5K and 10K races along the Truckee River offer fast, flat routes, and a trail half marathon will take competitors onto the newly public trails of Waddle Ranch above the Martis Valley. Short, non-competitive children’s running events will be held on the manicured lawns of the park.

Athlete registration will be available from 2-6 p.m. on Friday, July 1 at the Granite Chief store in Truckee, and from 7-8:15 a.m. on Saturday at River View Park. All adult races start at 9 a.m., with children’s races at 11. A barbecue follows at 11:30.
