A handful of ultrarunners from the Truckee/Tahoe area competed in the Way Too Cool 50K on Saturday, led by Tahoma resident Anna Mae Flynn's fourth-place women's finish in near-record time.
Flynn, 27, reached the finish line in 4 hours, 37 seconds, which was good enough for 34th place overall in a field of 979 runners. The time was the 10th-fastest among female runners in the 26-year history of the event. The run is one of the most competitive 50Ks in the country.
Patrick Smyth, 28, of Salt Lake City took the overall win in 3:04:48 and was followed by Ryan Bak (3:10:20) of Bend, Ore., and Tim Tollefson (3:20:20) of Mammoth Lakes.
Megan Roche, 24, of Sunnyvale was the top woman and 10th overall with a record-setting time of 3:41:56. Stephanie Howe of Bend finished runner-up in 3:47:14 — the second-fastest time in event history — and Yiou Wang (3:51:08) of San Anselmo, Calif., was third.
Another Tahoma resident, Jackie Clark, finished 26th in the women's field (141st overall) with a time of 4:48:59. Truckee's Gretchen Brugman finished 30th among women (147th overall) in 4:50:08, and Truckee's Jenelle Potvin was the 37th woman in 4:56:19.
