Top biathletes compete in Chuck Lyda Memorial Race

Special to the Sun

A field of 70 athletes competed in the Chuck Lyda Memorial Biathlon at the Auburn Ski Club in persistently windy conditions this past Sunday.

The event featured pro/elite, novice and youth divisions.

U.S. Biathlon Development Team member and Auburn Ski Club (ASC) athlete Patrick Johnson, 26, topped the podium in the 15K men's pro/elite division with a time of 51:17.9.

ASC's Peter Carroll, 18, a U.S. Youth World Biathlon Team member, was close on Johnson's heels in second place. Far West Master Biathlete Dave Eastwood rounded out the division's podium in 57:46.3.

"I was so excited to have Patrick here for this race," said ASC Biathlon Program Director and coach Glenn Jobe. "We're delighted that a break in his racing and training schedule from World Cup events in Europe coincided with our Lyda event.

"Having Peter Carroll here too, after recently returning from the World Junior Biathlon Championships in Romania, was also very special."

The pro/elite women competed on a 10K course. Eighteen-year-old Megan McCandless took the top podium spot with a time of 57:46.3, and ASC members Lisa Holan and Lorene Samoska took second and third, respectively.

Topping the mass-start novice women's field, which was comprised of both junior and adult biathletes competing on a 4.5K course, were Ella Kuzyk, Lexie Madigan and Frances Hamilton. On the men's side, Spencer Reid, Nick Burkhart and Steffen Cuneo took the top three spots.

Youth biathletes, all under the age of 12, competed on stadium loops in ASC's race arena.

Alex Jenkins and Tim Menard took first and second place, respectively, in the boys division, while Izzie Pullen, Zandra Feland and Anna Feland topped the girls field.

Auburn Ski Club boasts the only Olympic-distance, year-round biathlon range in the Western United States and offers both winter and summer programs. ASC's final biathlon event of the season, the Tahoe Mountain Sports Spring Biathlon, will be held March 12-13.
