Truckee baseball: Lowry sweep improves league mark to 10-2
April 21, 2009
TRUCKEE ” Truckee’s offense heated up with the weather this past weekend as the Wolverines improved to 10-2 in league after a convincing three-game sweep of visiting Lowry.
Truckee, which hit the ball well enough to overcome a bout of defensive errors, outscored the Buckaroos 45-20 in three games, winning 21-11 on Friday, and 5-1 and 19-8 in Saturday’s doubleheader.
The Wolverines (14-10 overall) then beat Colfax 10-2 in a nonleague game on the road Monday.
Head coach Mike Ellis gave credit to his team’s pitching staff, which boasts enough depth to withstand four games in four days.
“Pound-for-pound, I think we have the best pitching in Northern Nevada. We have five guys that can beat anybody (in league),” Ellis said, referring to pitchers Justin Vosburgh, Maclane Brady, Scott Mathot, Ryan Zusy and Brian Matthew.
Vosburgh looked sharp in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader, as the senior hurler pitched a complete-game two-hitter, striking out six while giving up two walks and one unearned run against Lowry’s top pitcher. He also drove in two runs and scored once in the game.

Senior first baseman Mike Fagan continued to swing a mean bat, going 9 for 10 with six RBI and six runs in the four games. Ellis said Fagan is hitting over .500, although the coach doesn’t know his exact average because he has yet to tally stats from every game this season.
After a 4-for-4 day at the plate Friday, Fagan said he could feel a strong performance coming.
“I had a good BP (batting practice) earlier, and I was seeing the ball well today,” he said.
Junior infielder Jordan Deiro went 2 for 3 with a grand slam in Game 1, while Vosburgh was 2 for 3 with a three-run home run.
Mathot (2-0) picked up the win, striking out two and walking one while allowing five runs (three earned) in 3 2/3 innings. Zusy relieved Mathot until the sixth, when Matt Theis was called in to finish the game.
Truckee amassed 18 hits in the finale against Lowry (5-7 league), led by a Mathot’s 4-for-4 day with a double, RBI and three runs.
Brady started on the mound for the Wolverines, allowing four hits and four runs in three innings. Jared McDonnell threw the last two innings, giving up five hits and four runs as Truckee won in five innings on the 10-run mercy rule.
Matthew pitched three innings and earned the win against Colfax. He had four strikeouts while allowing one run on three hits and a walk. Theis then gave up one run in two innings pitched, and Deiro held Colfax scoreless the final two innings as he struck out two.
Truckee has six games remaining on its league schedule ” three against Fernley and three against Yerington ” and will likely host the first round of the postseason on May 15-16.
