Truckee baseball: Wolverines split four games in Redding tournament

Sun Staff reports

REDDING, Calif. ” The Wolverines went 2-2 and finished fourth competing against all California programs in the Big League Dreams Tournament in Redding this past Thursday and Friday.

Truckee began the tournament with two wins on Thursday, beating Gridley 10-7 and Yreka 19-0 to advance to Friday’s championship round.

The Wolverines came up short in their bid to move on to the championship, losing 3-2 to Paradise before losing 10-0 to Wheatland to close the tournament.

Truckee head coach Mike Ellis said his team struggled to generate offense against the quality pitching of Paradise and Wheatland. But aside from a number of errors his Wolverines committed throughout the tournament, the coach was pleased with the results.

“We had a blast,” said Ellis, whose team remains 7-2 in Northern 3A league play. “California pitching sometimes is (better than in other states), and we got to see that up close the last two games.”

Especially the final contest against Wheatland, when Jordan Deiro and Kevin Decker had Truckee’s only two hits in the game, which was called after six innings on the 10-run mercy rule.
