In the middle row are Max Collinson, Ty Englert, Stein Retzlaff, Tony Buranzon, Chris Towle and Ryan Smith, while the back row includes head coach Mike Ellis, Trevor Auldridge, Andrew Metlenko and coach David Walker.

The Truckee varsity baseball team took a 2-2 split out of the Mike Beariman Memorial Preseason Tournament this past weekend, losing to 4A opponents Spanish Springs and Douglas while taking care of fellow 3A members Fallon and Elko.

In Friday’s opener, the Wolverines played Spanish Springs tough through three-plus innings to hold a 2-1 lead. But the Cougars struck back with seven runs in the fourth en route to a 9-3 victory.

Aaron Pado and Jackson Rohlf provided the Truckee offense, as Pado scored all three runs and Rohlf drove them all in.

Truckee moved down to Reed High School for the nightcap against defending 3A state champ Fallon. Fallon had no chance, as the Wolverines Steven Baker took the hill and shut out the Greenwave through six innings, striking out six while allowing just three hits and three walks.

Truckee took a 4-0 lead in the first, and peppered in another four runs to claim an 8-0 victory. Baker, Pado, Rohlf and Tony Buranzon each had two hits to pace the Wolverines. Third baseman Brooks Hudson turned in the defensive gem of the game when he made a diving stop of a hard-hit liner to his left, picked up the ball and threw to first for the out.

The tournament continued on Saturday, as Truckee traveled to Carson High to take on Elko. The Indians looked to be cruising to victory as they plated two in the first and added another in the third while loading the bases with no outs.

But the Wolverines turned the game around when they inserted relief pitcher Stein Retzlaff into the jam, who did not allow any of his inherited runners to score. Retzlaff finished out the game, throwing four scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and primarily relying on his defense to record the outs.

In the fourth, Truckee got on the board as Andy McKechnie singled, then scored on a hit by Retzlaff. In the fifth, Baker and Rohlf led off with consecutive singles, then scored on a two-run single by McKechnie to tie up the score. Trevor Auldridge then took home on a passed ball as Truckee took the 4-3 lead and victory. Pado and McKechnie paced Truckee at the plate with two hits each.

Truckee wrapped up the tournament against Douglas on Saturday night, losing 13-3. The Wolverines simply had no answer to the Tigers’ potent offense, which scored 13 runs on 11 hits, including two doubles and a home run. Baker, Rohlf, Hudson, Max Collinson, Ryan Smith, Travis Ferre and Cooper Krug each had a hit for Truckee.

The Wolverines, who lost 10-0 at Colfax in their opener last Thursday, are now 2-3 overall on the season.
