Truckee baseball: Wolverines suffer first league losses

Truckee’s six-game win streak to begin Northern 3A league play ended this past weekend with two losses and a win during a three-game series at Spring Creek.
Truckee is now 7-1 in league, while Spring Creek improved to 5-1 (10-2-1 overall).
The Spartans edged the Wolverines 8-7 in the final inning of Friday night’s series opener, then held Truckee to five hits in a 4-2 win Saturday morning. Truckee salvaged a win, 6-5, in the final game Saturday afternoon.
Truckee senior Justin Vosburgh took the loss on Friday, allowing three walks and six earned runs while striking out four in seven innings. It was a tough night to pitch, both for Vosburgh and Spring Creek’s ace, said Truckee head coach Mike Ellis, who described temperatures in the 20s with a breeze.
Junior Maclane Brady pitched the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, giving up four hits and two earned while issuing seven walks and striking out 10 in six innings.
Scott Mathot started the final game for Truckee, throwing 5 1/3 innings before Ryan Zusy came in to close. Zusy picked up the win, striking out three in 1 2/3 innings while allowing one run on three hits. Mathot gave up four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two.
