TRUCKEE and#8212; The Wolverines wasted a first-half comeback by scoring just three points in the third quarter as Fernley pulled away for a 61-49 win Saturday.

The loss ended Truckeeand#8217;s season at 3-9 in Northern 3A league play, one win away from earning a spot in the regional postseason tournament. Fernley, which improved to 4-8 in league with the win, will enter as the sixth and final playoff seed.

After jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead on a steal and layup by Tyler Ferris and a 3-pointer by Matt Mehan, Truckee went cold as the Vaqueros answered with a 13-0 run.

The Wolverines then clamped down defensively the latter part of the first half, turning a 23-11 deficit into a 35-33 lead shortly before the midway point. The score was tied at the half, 36-36.

Truckee emerged from the half ice-cold on the offensive end, scoring just three points the entire third quarter while Fernley built its lead to 49-39. The Wolverines finally got on the board in the second half when Ferris hit a free throw with 3:19 remaining in the quarter.

The home team picked up the pace slightly in the fourth quarter, when it scored 10 points. But it was too little, too late.

Cade Knutson punished the Wolverines from behind the 3-point line, making six of his eight 3-point attempts and finishing with 28 points.

Ferris led Truckee with 17 points, while Ben Bolton added 11 points.
