TRUCKEE and#8212; The Wolverines built a double-digit lead with a dominant second quarter en route to a 57-35 win against visiting Yerington on Saturday.

With the win Truckee improved to 2-2 in the Northern 3A after also defeating Dayton, 46-36, in a league game on the road Friday.

After falling behind midway through the first quarter against the Lions, the Wolverines took complete control in the second quarter with a flurry of points off a suffocating press.

By the half, Truckee had turned a two-point deficit to start the second quarter into a 36-20 lead. And they never looked back.

and#8220;We just applied a lot of pressure on defense, which caused them (the Lions) to turn the ball over,and#8221; said Truckee head coach Angelo Tenorio. and#8220;And then we were able to capitalize on those turnovers, so that was big for us.and#8221;

Junior Megan Shalvis led the Wolverines with 18 points to go along with her several blocked shots and steals. Annie Rodriguez and Aly Coronado-Smith each scored eight points for the Wolverines, while Brooke Griffin added seven points. McKenna Lommori led Yerington with 12 points.

Truckee maintained its defensive pressure after the half, scoring off turnovers and converting at the free-throw line to extend its lead to 46-29 by the end of the third quarter. The only lapse from the home team came early in the contest, when Yerington scored nine unanswered points to take an 11-8 lead after Truckee had jumped out to a 6-0 advantage.

and#8220;They relaxed a little bit,and#8221; Tenorio said of his team. and#8220;Weand#8217;ve had a tendency to relax too much at times. We need to work on staying strong all the way till the end and being consistent.and#8221;

At Dayton on Friday, the Wolverines clamped down defensively in the second half to pull away from the Dust Devils and leading scorer Kathy Arias, who connected on four 3-pointers in the first half to keep her team in the game.

and#8220;We did a really good job on her in the second half,and#8221; Tenorio said. and#8220;We made an adjustment at the half and were able to shut her down after that.and#8221;

Arias scored 12 points to lead the Dust Devils, while Rodriguez led Truckee with 12 points. Shalvis contributed 10 points in the win, Aleigh Krug had eight points, and Katy Stephens and Mollie Askin each had six.
