Truckee basketball: Girls fall in OT to visiting Spartans

Staff report

Despite a strong effort, the Truckee girls dropped a crucial league game in overtime, 43-39, against visiting Spring Creek on Wednesday.

The loss dropped the Wolverines from fifth place to sixth in the Northern Division I-A standings. Although they share the same 6-8 record as Spring Creek, the Spartans own the tiebreaker after defeating the Wolverines in both regular-season meetings.

Nevertheless, Truckee has clinched a berth in the six-team regional championship tournament with two league games remaining.

Truckee finished the first quarter up 7-5 but fell behind 18-11 by the half. The Wolverines then outscored the Spartans 13-10 in the third quarter and 8-4 in the fourth to force the overtime period, which they lost 11-7.

Senior point guard Sydney Mock led the way with a game-high 17 points, Shelby Brooks added eight points, Sara Sawyer had six, Karina Nunez five and Maddie Monson three. Johanna Marcille led Spring Creek with 13 points.

Truckee also dropped a league game at first-place Fallon, 63-31, on Tuesday. Mock scored nine points, Monson and Sawyer each scored six, and Elizabeth Morgan had two.

The Wolverines could still finish ahead ahead of Spring Creek for the fifth playoff seed, but the Spartans have the easier remaining schedule. Spring Creek ends the season with games against seventh-place South Tahoe (4-10) and eighth-place Dayton (2-12), while Truckee has to face second-place Lowry (11-3) and fourth-place Fernley (8-6). Truckee owns the tiebreaker over South Tahoe should the two finish with the same league record.

The regional championship tournament will be contested at North Valleys High School in Reno from Feb. 18-20.

Truckee's boys, meanwhile, dropped their latest league contest at Fallon on Tuesday by a score of 50-33. Stats were not available.

The girls are scheduled to host Lowry on Friday at 6 p.m. and Fernley on Saturday at 1 p.m. The boys host the same teams Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 3:30.
