Truckee basketball: Girls play Elko tough on road

The Truckee girls basketball team finally played its league opener after a couple of weather-induced postponements. The Wolverines traveled to Elko last Tuesday and gave the Indians all they could handle before coming up short, 62-51.

The Wolverines fell behind early at Elko and never quite recovered, despite a strong team effort led by senior captain Sydney Mock. The slick-scoring point guard posted a game-high 26 points on 7-of-15 shooting. She also was 11-of-12 from the free-throw line and recorded five assists, five rebounds and six steals.
Elko led 19-11 after one quarter and 38-26 at the half. The Wolverines won the third quarter by three points to cut the lead to 51-42 by the end of the frame. The visitors then pulled to within seven points early in the fourth quarter but could not close the gap.
Seven players scored for the Wolverines, with junior forward Maddie Monson finishing with seven points, Shelby Brooks with six and Adela Ortiz five. Marlena Montano added four points and Karina Nunez had two.
The Indians were led by three players in double figures, including Ashton Heathman with 15 points and Siana Carsrud and Alicia Marin with 12 apiece.

The Wolverines fell to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in the Northern Division I-A. The Indians are 2-0 in league and overall.
Against McQueen, which improved to 10-1 overall, senior guard Sadaria Mcalister led the Lancers with 25 points on an efficient 12-of-16 from the floor. Truckee stats were not available.
