Truckee basketball: Girls split vs. Fallon, Dayton

The Truckee girls basketball team split a pair of league games at home, falling 47-13 to first-place Fallon on Friday and defeating Dayton, 45-34, on Saturday.

The Wolverines are now in fifth place at 3-4 in the Northern Division I-A with nine league games remaining. The top four teams advance to the regional championship tournament, which is scheduled for Feb. 18-20 at North Valleys High School in Reno.

Friday's game was tightly contested through three quarters, with Dayton (1-5) holding a one-point edge entering the fourth. That's when Truckee took over, outscoring the visitors 22-10 in the final frame to earn the win.

Senior point guard Sydney Mock led the Wolverines with a team-high 13 points, while Izzy Abarno and Audrey Colburn scored eight points apiece, Shelby Brooks had six, and Marlena Montano four.

Fallon, the only remaining undefeated team in the league, at 8-0, controlled Friday's action from the onset. The Greenwave led 10-2 after one quarter and 30-4 at the half.

Freshman Leilani Otuafi led Fallon with 18 points and Megan McCormick added 13. Maddie Monson led the Wolverines with six points, and Karina Nunez scored three.

Boys' comeback falls short

While Truckee's boys lost both league contests, they nearly pulled off a comeback win over the Dust Devils, only to fall one point short, 48-47. The Wolverines also played well against Fallon in a 63-53 loss.

Trailing 38-29 after three quarters against Dayton (1-5), Truckee (0-8) outscored the visitors 18-10 in the fourth to narrow the final margin to one.

Senior guard Jenner Tresan posted a season-high 22 points to lead the Wolverines. Ben Miller scored 12 points, Airon Yarbrough had six and Diego Abundiz three. Josh Riders scored 22 for the Dust Devils.

Tresan also led Truckee with 15 points against Fallon (4-4), while Justin Wadsworth added 11 points, and Gabe Cruz, Miller and Abundiz each scored eight. Clay Davison led the Greenwave with 17.
