Truckee basketball: Girls split vs. Spring Creek, Sparks

The Truckee girls split a pair of league games on the road last week, losing 51-34 in a makeup game at Spring Creek on Tuesday and defeating Sparks, 61-24, on Friday.

After an even first quarter at Sparks that ended with Truckee leading 11-10, the Wolverines outscored the hosts 16-4 in the second quarter and 17-5 in both the third and fourth quarters to pull away.

Senior point guard Sydney Mock posted a triple-double with 16 points, 12 steals and 11 assists. Mock — who's averaging 13.4 points per game, which ranks fourth in the Northern Division I-A — was 6-for-9 from the field and 2-for-2 from three-point range.

Maddie Monson added 10 points, six rebounds and three assists, Marlena Montano and Shelby Brooks each scored eight points, Sara Sawyer had six points, and Izzy Abarno, Adela Ortiz and Elizabeth Morgan each had four. Brooks also pulled down seven rebounds, while Ortiz and Montano each had six rebounds.

At Spring Creek, Mock led the Wolverines with 15 points, 10 steals, six rebounds and five assists. Monson contributed six points and five rebounds, and Brooks had five points.

Truckee is tied for fifth in the league standings, at 4-5. Spring Creek is 4-4 and Sparks is 0-9. The top four teams qualify for the regional championship tournament.

The Truckee boys lost 64-51 at Sparks on Friday.

The Wolverines led 10-6 at the end of the first quarter but were outscored 17-12 in the second quarter and 21-8 in the third en route to the loss.

Sophomore guard Gabe Cruz led Truckee with 14 points, while Airon Yarbrough scored 12 points, Jenner Tresan had six points, and Diego Abundiz and Ben Miller each had five.

Matthew Longland scored a game-high 17 points for the Railroaders.

Truckee fell to 0-9 in league as Sparks improved to 4-5.

The Truckee girls are scheduled to host Elko on Friday at 6 p.m. and Spring Creek on Saturday at 1 p.m. The boys face the same teams on the road.
