Truckee beats Virgin Valley, advances to title match up with Manogue
November 21, 2002
Six turnovers and 204 passing yards by Kevin Schlesinger were enough for Truckee to beat the 3A South’s first seed, Virgin Valley, 21-7 Saturday in Mesquite.
The team was led by defensive back Jacob Bohart with eight tackles and three interceptions.
“That was one of the funnest games I’ve ever played,” Bohart said. “I had the urge because it could’ve been our last game.”
Bohart only had one interception and 20 tackles leading into Saturday’s match-up.
The Wolverines will play Bishop Manogue for the 3A Nevada state championship Saturday at 1 p.m. at North Valleys High in northern Reno. The Miners beat Truckee 38-19 on Oct. 26 and the Wolverines are looking for revenge.
“I don’t think there’s a player on the team or a coach on the coaching staff that can’t wait for this game,” coach Bob Shaffer said.

“I hope I get a couple more interceptions,” Bohart said.
It was warm and sunny in Mesquite for the game, unlike the previous Saturday’s “snowbowl” against Lowry.
“Playing in the good weather was great, I hope it’s like that this weekend,” receiver R.J. Ballou said.
Virgin Valley had a couple of good players that kept Truckee working hard, but they weren’t matching up.
“They looked better on film than they really were,” Ballou said.
However, they held Truckee to 299 total offensive yards in the semi-final playoff game and Virgin Valley gained 246 total offensive yards.
But the turnovers blew the game open.
“Our defense did real well, our offense was efficient. We didn’t run the ball as well as I would have liked,” Shaffer said. “We were real happy with our special teams.
Especially going down and spending the night, practicing three days in the gym, I thought our kids did real well, considering everything.”
The three touchdowns were scored by Mike Hackley on a four-yard run, Jamie Maehler on an 11-yard reception from Schlesinger and a two-yard plunge by Nick Smith.
Schlesinger finished 15 for 19 with 204 yards and the touchdown toss and 41 yards on 10 carries. R.J. Ballou finished with six receptions and 103 yards. Safety James Ward led the defense with 15 tackles along with Bohart.
