Truckee boys soccer off to hot start
August 27, 2007
The Truckee High boys soccer team defeated defending 4A champion South Tahoe, 2-0, in the championship game of the Seventh Annual Howell Memorial Preseason Tournament at Galena on Saturday.
Truckee, which won four games on the pitch and another by forfeit, scored 11 goals while holding opponents scoreless. The Wolverines defeated Carson, 1-0, Galena, 5-0 and Manogue, 3-0.
South Tahoe coach Chris Deleon said that he was not pleased that the Wolverines received a four-hour rest to the Vikings’ 45 minutes before the finals. Truckee received an extended break because Spanish Springs pulled out of the tournament, forfeiting a game to the Wolverines.
“They were lucky,” Deleon said of the Wolverines. “It’s not to say Truckee isn’t a good team. They were the best competition that we had on Saturday. They are a solid team.
“We were tired mentally and physically. When you play four games back to back with 45 minutes rest here and there, it’s a hard tournament.”
The Truckee High girls went 1-2 in the Galena tournament while North Tahoe finished 0-3 competing against the larger 4A opponents.
