Truckee cross country | Freshmen contingent leads way at regionals

Truckee’s standout freshmen cross-country runners hung with the upper rung of their elder competition in every varsity race they entered this season and#8212; and they didn’t change a thing at the Northern 3A Regional Championship in Reno this past Friday.
Five Truckee freshmen recorded top-10 finishes in their respective races, while the Truckee boys advanced to the state championship with a third-place finish as a team. Three of the four Truckee girls advanced to state individually, but the Wolverines needed a fifth girl to complete a team score.
Racing on a 5-kilometer course at Rancho San Rafael Park, freshman Nick Oberriter led the Truckee boys with a fourth-place finish in a time of 17 minutes and 40 seconds. Connor Henderson of South Tahoe, which won the regional team title, took first in 17:05.
Two other freshmen Wolverines cracked the top 10 to help lead the boys to their state berth. Nathan Ariza finished seventh in a time of 18:01, while Noah Oberriter was eighth in 18:15. Senior Alex Kopytko placed 27th in 19:19 and junior Nick Morgan was 30th in 19:24 to round out Truckee’s top five scores. Kyle Jorgensen was 40th out of 61 runners in 20:05.
South Tahoe’s boys ran away with the regional title with relative ease, posting a low score of 49 points to runner-up Elko’s 74 and Truckee’s 76. Only the top three teams advanced to state.
In the girls’ 5K race, Truckee freshman Skyler Flora raced to a third-place finish behind the Elko duo of Mary Jo Wright and Shelbie Dorsa. Wright posted a winning time of 19 minutes and 44 seconds, while Dorsa placed runner-up in 19:57 and Flora took third with a time of 20:02.

Another Truckee freshman, Gabrielle Rinne, posted a seventh-place finish in a time of 21:18 and#8212; top seven were podium and#8212; while junior Ruby Wood placed 16th in 21:54 to earn an individual state berth. Truckee freshman Michaela Welch was 29th in 23:52 and narrowly missed qualifying. The top seven individuals from non-qualifying teams advanced to state.
Elko’s girls won the regional title with a low score of 30 points, South Tahoe was second with 44 points and Spring Creek a distant third with 102.
