Truckee ends regular season undefeated

Matt Riddle

Truckee Girl’s Soccer ended it’s regular season with an easy win over Bishop Manogue on Oct. 30, 6-0, and are gearing up for the postseason regional tournament in Winnemucca, which starts today.

The day before they shutout Whittell in Stateline 3-0. The previous Saturday, they played in last week’s home game against Incline Village, rounding up three games in five days. They took practice off last Thursday and Friday.

“We’ll have two real good practices on Monday and Tuesday and fine tune things on Wednesday and then Thursday, a way we go,” coach Kyle Adams said after the Manogue victory. “That’s business at hand.”

That business will be against Battle Mountain, which Truckee shutout on Sept. 20 by seven goals.

“Now it’s just trying to keep them sharp and keep them rested, keep them healthy and get them ready for next Thursday for their first round game,” coach Kyle Adams said. “They’re ready to go.”

The only sad note came after the Manogue game, when the seniors had finished their last home game in Truckee.

“It was kind of sad,” senior Michelle Austin said. “Because I kept think that this is the last time I’ll play on this field.”

Austin and the Wolverines’ season has been a big one though. The defense allowed only six goals and scored 105 goals for the regular season.

“We had a couple of defensive breakdowns, but you could probably count on a hand how many defensive breakdowns we had,” Austin said.

That play has been led by goalie Emily Griesmer with 10 shutouts and a couple more possible before the weekend is over.

“She kept the shutouts by making some really nice saves,” Adams said of the junior. “Her and the defense have earned everything that they’ve done this year.”

It’s been a seven-day waiting game.

“They’re ready to play. They know what it takes to get there,” Adams said. “They’ve been there. We’ve got good leadership with the seniors, we’ve got a good bench, they’re ready to go. They’re hungry. They’re looking forward to it.

“So am I.”
