WINNEMUCCA, Nev. — Early in the first quarter, on the Wolverines’ second play from scrimmage, quarterback Jayden Commendatore connected with Cole Harrity, who juked his way to a 40-yard touchdown.

It was a sign of things to come.

Led by Commendatore’s 254 passing yards and three touchdowns, and backed by a suffocating defense, the Truckee football team shut out Lowry 41-0 in a 3A Northern League contest Friday night at Lowry High School.

“It was a good team win,” said Truckee coach Josh Ivens, whose team held a 35-0 command at halftime. “Everybody got in the game and contributed to the win.”

No one more than Commendatore, who was an ultra-efficient 12 of 15 passing with no interceptions. On Truckee’s opening drive, the senior quarterback marched the Wolverines — pinned back on their own 3-yard-line — 97 yards down the field in five plays, culminating in Harrity’s deep TD catch.

“The key I thought was right off the bat, we just came out swinging and were able to go down the field,” Ivens said.

Commendatore’s standout night was highlighted late in the second quarter when he orchestrated a textbook two-minute drill, punctuated by a 36-yard touchdown pass to Ian Schmidig with 20 seconds left in the half.

“He knew we could throw short, but he decided to take a shot on a post pattern to Ian Schmidig,” Ivens said of Commendatore. “It paid off.”

SOLID RUSHING ATTACK

On the ground, Wulfe Retzlaff led the way with 106 rushing yards on nine carries.

Harrity tallied 112 all-purpose yards and Carson Mccarron had 104 total yards with two touchdowns. Schmidig and Noah Williams each added a rushing touchdown.

In all, the Wolverines gashed the Broncos for 527 yards while limiting Lowry to just 76 yards.

“Defensively, it was just guys playing their responsibilities,” Ivens said. “We didn’t play perfect defense by any stretch of the imagination, but we were able to shut them out.”

Harrity had a team-high 10 tackles while Retzlaff had six.

DAYTON UP NEXT

Truckee (3-0, 3-0 3A Northern) looks to remain unbeaten Friday when it travels to winless Dayton (0-3, 0-3) for a league game. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

“They’re improved from last year,” Ivens said of Dayton, fresh off a 52-12 loss to Spring Creek. “They’ve got good receivers, their QB is athletic and quick, and their defense is a lot more active than last year.

“We’re 3-0, which is good, but we’ve got our eyes set on Dayton and we’re not underestimating them at all.”
