Truckee girls open year with 64-31 win over Sparks

The Truckee girls' basketball team jumped into Class 3A Northern League play to start the year, opening the season at home on Tuesday, Dec. 5 with a 64-31 win over Sparks.
The contest would be tight to start out, with the Lady Wolverines holding a 10-9 advantage over a Railroaders program that hasn't won a game since Feb. 6, 2016.
The Wolverines would begin to separate themselves from Sparks in the second quarter and, extended their lead to a 27-18 advantage by halftime.
Truckee went on to outscore Sparks 37-13 in the second half to pick up the season-opening victory.
Freshman Emma Cooley made a big statement in her first high school game, hitting four 3-pointers and scoring a team-high 20 points for Truckee.
Freshman Lauren Tanner was next in scoring for the Wolverines with 10 points along with a team-high five assists and seven steals. As a team, Truckee finished the game with 37 steals.

Senior Isabella Abarno was Truckee's third leading scorer with seven points.
Truckee's third varsity freshman player, Annika Thayer, also had an excellent night with a team-high nine rebounds (five offensive). Senior Emma Costa was next for Truckee with seven boards.
Truckee will next play four games at the Whittell tournament. The Wolverines will open the tournament on Thursday, Dec. 7, against Class 2A Incline (2-0). The Highlanders are fresh off a 46-37 win over South Tahoe.
Truckee will then play Class 1A Owyhee and Class 4A Hug in doubleheader action the following day, and then close the tournament against Whittell on Sat. Dec. 9.
