The Truckee High girls soccer team heated up a very cold evening at Surprise Stadium Tuesday night with a 4-1 victory over rival North Tahoe.

It was the composure on the ball and possession that kept the Wolverines a step ahead of the visiting Lakers.

The first opportunity for Truckee came in the 14th minute on a Katie Dill breakaway that North Tahoe goalkeeper Joelle Lazzareschi made two huge back-to-back saves to keep the ball out of the net.

Lazzareschi and the Lakers could only do so much, however, as Truckee junior Lauren O’Neil found an open corner in the net off a nice cross from senior forward Sara Grossman to put Truckee up 1-0 with 20 minutes to play in the first half.

The score held through the first half, with Truckee controlling the flow of play.

It was Hannah Ewing laying down hard tackle after hard tackle and Lazzareschi making numerous key saves that held the Lakers in the game through the first half.

Ten minutes into the second half Dill filled the net on another nice Grossman cross to put the Wolverines up 2-0.

With 24 minutes to play in the game, Lazzareschi made perhaps her only mistake in an otherwise stellar game when she bobbled a Stephanie O’Neil cross into the net to give Truckee a 3-0 lead.

North Tahoe’s offense kicked things into high gear about halfway through the second half, and with 16 minutes left Jenna Burnside put the Lakers on the board with a lovely floater over the head of Truckee goalkeeper Rachel Greenbach and into the side netting of the far post to give the Lakers hope with a 3-1 score.

Truckee senior Nicole Oxandaboure broke the Lakers’ hopes with a minute left to play when she scored perhaps the goal of the game. Oxandaboure received a ball on the corner of the 18-yard box, spun her mark and lofted a clinical ball over the head of goalkeeper Kea Jolicoeur to put the Wolverines up 4-1, which held through the final whistle.

Truckee head coach Amy Valdivia said she was happy with the way her team played after not facing a tough opponent in a couple weeks.

“It was nice to see them come out hard,” Valdivia said.

With a few key North Tahoe players out or not 100 percent due to injury or illness ” namely defenders Kacie Conn and Shain Wickman ” head Laker coach Kristin Ylander said she is still struggling with the right lineup.

Regardless, she remains optimistic about the future and the postseason.

“I still think we haven’t played to our potential against Truckee,” said Ylander, whose team lost to the Wolverines by a count of 5-1 on Sept. 12. “Somewhere down the line we will play them again.”

North Tahoe will close out its season on the road, facing Dayton today, Whittell on Oct. 24 and finishing with Incline on Oct. 27.

Truckee will host Battle Mountain on Oct. 21 and Incline on Oct. 24 to close out the regular season.
