Truckee girls tennis prepping for a new season
August 23, 2007
Camaraderie cannot be taught. That leaves one less thing to worry about for Truckee High girls tennis coach Jessica Putz.
“I’m really happy with the team so far,” said Putz, squinting to shade the morning sun as her team ran drills at the Tahoe Donner Tennis Center early Wednesday. “We have a lot of returners and three new freshman who are looking good.”
With those returners comes team unity, the coach said.
“The girls have been playing together for a couple years now, so they know each other’s styles and we know who works well together. They’re coming together as a team,” Putz said.
Haley Adams, one of three senior team captains, agreed with her coach.
“We have a lot of charisma,” Adams said. “Basically, there’s always people being loud.” In a good way, she said.

The 2007 Wolverines boast a roster of 19, up three from last year’s group of 16. Besides the three freshman ” Natalie Cutler, Cami Straw and Kelsey Johnson ” the roster breaks down to six seniors, six juniors and four sophomores.
Among the corps of upperclassmen is co-team captain Casey Haynes, a senior entering her fourth year on the team. Like Putz and Adams, she holds optimism about the quickly approaching season, which begins Tuesday when Galena visits Truckee for a 3:30 p.m. start.
Haynes’ confidence in her team stems in part from the helping hand of Zeke Sraw, director of tennis at Northstar-at-Tahoe and father of Cami Straw.
“I think that with the help we’re getting (from Straw) we’ll be stronger earlier, instead of halfway through the season,” Haynes said as teammates sprinted through drills led by the enthusiastic tennis director.
Zeke Straw also is helping coach the Truckee boys tennis team.
“These kids are devoted,” he said. “We’ve got ’em doing wind sprints and suicides.”
Sometimes as early as 7 a.m., as Putz has held several practices from 7-9.
“It’s OK,” Adams said when asked about the early practice time. “It’s not like going to school, where it’s horrible.”
