Truckee gymnasts impress at Snowflake Invitational

The Truckee Gymnastics competitive team enjoyed a strong season opener at the USA Gymnastics-sanctioned Snowflake Invitational in Oroville on Feb. 7.

Within five months of the team's debut competition, each of the Truckee Gymnastics competitors topped the podium at least once, outscoring gymnasts from Sacramento, Redding, Oroville, Carson City and Davis.

Annika Johnson, a sixth-grader at North Tahoe Middle School, brought home a collection of hardware including the gold on uneven bars, the silver on floor exercise, and the bronze on vault.

Her excellent performance secured her an all-around score of 35.675 with personal-best scores on bars and vault. Johnson dominated the competition with her grace and near flawless performances, earning her the Level 4 all-around champion title. 

Kira Thomas, a seventh-grader at Alder Creek Middle School, received personal-best scores on nearly all events, including vault, balance beam, and floor exercise.

Her power and strength on the Vault resulted in a score of 9.35, placing her atop the podium with the gold. Her solid performance on each of the four events earned her a Level 4 all-around score of 34.0, a large improvement from her previous best of 32.625.

Paige Willcox, a third-grader at Glenshire Elementary, is the team's youngest competitor; this was her second full-event competition. Willcox's flexibility and poise stood out on the floor exercise, earning her top marks of 9.35, crowning her the floor exercise Level 3 champion. She earned personal-best scores on every event, including a 9.275 on vault. 

Missing from the competition was Natalie Lang-Ree, also a seventh-grader at Alder Creek Middle School. Lang-Ree is a Level 4 gymnast with Truckee Gymnastics. 

The team's next competition is March 21-22 at Technique Gymnastics in Rancho Cordova.

The Truckee Gymnastics competitive team was established in 2014. The team is coached by Christina Milke, a former USA Gymnastics Level 10 gymnast from Rochester Gymnastics Academy in New York, who joined the coaching staff after moving here from Peninsula Gymnastics in San Mateo.
