Truckee JV football team runs past Dayton

Staff reports

Justin Vosburgh, Robert Raber and C.J. Ackerman combined to score eight touchdowns and 335 yards rushing as the Truckee High junior varsity football team cruised to a 64-14 victory against Dayton Saturday at Surprise Stadium.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead and cruised home with a win against their Northern 3A opponent.

“Offensively, I was very proud of our kids,” said Truckee head coach Steve Ames. “We blocked extremely well and we ran extremely hard. Every week we keep improving. We’re not near our potential, though. We can become a lot better offensively.”

That’s scary, considering the Wolverines rushed for 414 yards as a team.

“I’m embarrassed to say we can get much better after scoring 64 points, but as a team we need to finish the plays,” Ames said. “It’s not so much the end of the offensive plays that are allowing us to score as much as it’s the opponent’s defense giving up.”

Vosburgh rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns, plus he scored one special teams touchdown on an 80-yard return. Raber rushed for 114 yards, three touchdowns and a pair of 2-point conversions. Ackerman ran for 98 yards and two touchdowns, while Uriel Malo contributed 76 yards and one touchdown and Anthony Smith gained six yards.

Steve Carter was 2-for-10 in the passing department, good for 27 yards. Ryan Roberts caught one pass for 12 yards and Ackerman had one reception for 15 yards.

Roberts also kicked a 35-yard field goal.

Ames felt the Wolverines were solid on both sides of the ball.

“Defensively, we really stuffed them early in the game,” the coach said, adding that reserve players saw extensive action in the second half. “Everyone did a great job with just a couple of mistakes.”

Ryan Cook and Chris Knex both had interceptions. John Johnson had a fumble recovery and was also solid on the offensive side as he filled in Brian Sipe, according to Ames.

Truckee’s game plan called for the defensive line to apply pressure on Dayton’s quarterback.

“They did extremely well, with Mike McNamara getting a couple of sacks, along with Kevin Decker. Dylan Crosby and Lupe Solis, Josh Johnson and Chris Collier had a great game holding up the middle of the field,” Ames said.

The coach added praise for solid defensive performances by the linebackers and defensive backs: Chris Raymer, Chris Knex, Briar Shrock, Travis Dwyer, Flynn Rice, Ryan Cook, Raber, Vosburgh and Ackerman.

Truckee’s junior varsity squad has two games left on the schedule, including an 11 a.m. home game against Spring Creek this Saturday. The Wolverines finish at Sparks the following week.
