October 19, 2010
The Truckee JV girls’ soccer team split its last two games against North Tahoe and South Tahoe on Saturday at Riverview Park.
The Wolverines defeated North Tahoe 2-0 before losing a painful game to South Tahoe, 3-1.
North Tahoe played a great game against the Wolverines, holding them to only two goals. Defender Heather Fissel passed to Sydney Vandenberg, who dribbled through four defenders to fire the first goal into the net. The second goal was set up by Emily Houghton, who crossed the ball to Cynthia Santana for the score.
Sonia Blanco was named MVP for her pivotal positioning on the field and Ashley Harris was MVP for her relentless crosses.
Against South Tahoe, Truckee dominated the first half of the game. Shelby Matthews had a breakaway going one-on-one with the keeper. She chipped the ball over the goalie’s head to score Truckee’s first goal, and give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead at the half.
Goalies Gina Bauerline and Cassandra Sawyer defended many great shots. However, the Vikings blasted back-to-back goals to take a one-point lead. The final goal came in the last two minutes of the game. Coach Katie named Lauren Huesby and Melissa Cardoza MVPs for their endless energy and maintaining control over the center of the field.
