Truckee, North Tahoe volleyball | Wolverines beat Whittell; Lakers topped by South Tahoe

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. and#8212; It wasn’t an ideal opponent for Whittell High volleyball team to open the all-new Mount Rose League.

Defending state champion Truckee swept its Lake Tahoe neighbor in three games Friday night, but the Warriors hung with the Wolverines in each game. The Wolverines won 25-20, 25-19 and 25-18 to improve to 2-0 in Mount Rose competition.

and#8220;You can tell they have played together for a while. They are a good team unit,and#8221; said Whittell coach Nate Byrne.



Truckee, which improved to 20-4 overall, displayed superior passing to prevent the Warriors from extending the match. In the final game when Whittell made a mini run to pull within 20-12, the Wolverines set up Kiersten Knoppel for a kill over an attempted block by junior Megan Mize. Whittell scrapped its way back to 24-18 before Truckee finished the match.

and#8220;They had some really strong play, and they followed everything,and#8221; Mize said.



The Wolverines were led by Krysta Murphy’s nine kills in 29 attacks and six kills from Annie Reiswig. Senior setter Jillian Akers provided 15 assists and 18 service points, including four aces.

For the Warriors, Darby Reeder and Mize delivered six and five kills, respectively, and Rachel Laub made 15 digs.

Progress and#8212; not the outcome and#8212; was the focus of the Warriors afterward.

and#8220;We’ve come so far from where we started, and we could see it tonight,and#8221; Mize said. and#8220;Even though we didn’t win, we were happy with the way we played.and#8221;

UP NEXT: Truckee hosts Whittell on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and Incline on Friday at 6 p.m.

South Tahoe earned its first Mount Rose League volleyball win on Friday night, silencing North Tahoe 25-10, 25-21 and 25-22 in South Lake Tahoe.

A night after being swept by Incline, the Vikings rallied behind the play of sophomore Drew Norberg and senior Kendall Madsen, who was playing in her first match of the season. Norberg contributed eight kills, four aces and a block, while Madsen made seven kills. Tori Smith and London Gustofson each delivered two kills.

Mel Sabac equaled Norberg with four aces, and Ellen Dupree and Morgan Kaufer made two aces.

South Tahoe is 1-1 in the Mount Rose League and North Tahoe is 0-2.

UP NEXT: The Lakers host South Tahoe on Thursday and Sparks on Friday. Both matches start at 6 p.m.
