Truckee Running Festival attracts large crowd — and Archie the mascot

Hundreds of smiling, sun-drenched runners — and one plump, red mascot — helped make the Truckee Running Festival a success on Saturday.

More than 250 people from young to old participated in the annual running festival at River View Sports Park. The event featured several racing options, including a half marathon, 10K and 5K, as well as shorter kids races.

Archie, the Reno Aces' mascot, also was on hand to lend support and high-fives to the many younger participants.

While the 5K was treated as more of a fun run — serving as a fundraiser for Girls on the Run Sierras — the 10K and half marathon drew a competitive bunch as early races on the Big Blue Adventure calendar.

The 5K and 10K followed riverside routes along the Legacy Trail. The half marathon sent runners on a 13.1-mile loop through the trails of Waddle Ranch.

Shortly after the 5K mass start, half-marathon leader Connor Henderson, 20, of South Lake Tahoe cruised across the finish. Henderson, a 2013 South Tahoe High School grad and two-time cross-country state champion, posted a winning time of 1 hour, 28 minutes, 19 seconds.

"It was awesome. The course was easily marked so I had no question where I was going. And it's great weather and a great course," said Henderson, who now runs for Monterey Peninsula College.

Truckee's Donatas Ereminas, 33, the defending champion in the half marathon, finished runner-up in 1:29:48, and Ryan Ress of Reno was third in 1:32:12.

Defending women's champion Kristen Walstad of Alta, who was a force in the Tahoe-area race scene last summer, finished fourth overall with a time of 1:32:58. Josh Shertey (hometown unknown) was fifth in 1:36:02, and Truckee's Nico Medrano was sixth in 1:36:16.

Soda Springs runner Caitlin Bernstein placed second among women and seventh overall in 1:36:38. She was followed by Ryan Stoffer of Minden (1:39:06), John Woodnutt of Johannesburg (1:47:08) and Dan Jenkins of Truckee (1:47:56) rounding out the top 10.

Truckee's Mary Oamek (1:55:44), Rebecca Anderson (1:56:11) and Mary Lubrano (1:56:40) finished fourth through sixth in the women's field, respectively.

A total of 67 people competed in the half marathon.

10K

The 10K featured a field of 52 runners. No stranger to success, 46-year-old ultrarunner Ross McMahan of Incline Village claimed the victory with a time of 40:13.71.

Evan Gibson of San Francisco placed second in 40:22.7 and Holden Reed of Truckee was third in 40:35.71. They were trailed by Ryan Sullivan of Carson City (42:26.56) in fourth and Charles Mallett of Tahoe City (44:27.97) in fifth. Squaw Valley's Andy Wirth was seventh (48:08.98).

Another Incline Village runner, Meghan Pry, 35, was the top woman and eighth overall in 48:56.93, while Truckee's Michelle Reed was second among women and 10th overall in 50:07.98.

5K

The 5K was the most popular distance, with 150 runners. Many of those participants were young members of Girls on the Run Sierras.

Adult runners from Reno swept the top four spots, with 25-year-old Ryan Nelson winning with a time of 19:10.17, and 31-year-old Danielle Landis placing first among women and third overall in 20:22.20.

Ella Kuzyk, a 14-year-old from Incline Village, finished fifth overall in 21:50.70, while 9-year-old Noah McMahan, also from Incline, was eighth in 23:17.70.
