Truckee soccer takes two at Sparks

The Truckee High boys soccer team came from behind to defeat Sparks 4-2 on the road Tuesday.

Truckee improved to 4-0-1 in league play and 12-1-1 overall, while Sparks ” which was on an eight-game winning streak ” fell to 3-2 in league and 8-2 overall. Both Sparks losses came against Truckee.

The Railroaders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by Abey Quintino ” the first on a penalty kick in the sixth minute and the second on a breakaway in the 14th minute.

Truckee responded with a flurry of goals, starting with a Max Brixey penalty kick just four minutes later.

In the 23rd minute, Truckee senior Salvador Tejeda took a headed pass from Brixey and buried it in the back of the net to tie the score at 2-2. The Wolverines pulled ahead with six minutes remaining in the first-half when sophomore Michael Brixey knocked a ball out of the air and booted it with his left foot past Sparks keeper Javier Torres.

Max Brixey scored Truckee’s final goal 13 minutes into the second half off a Robby Heck corner kick.

“It was intense,” Truckee coach Hernan Valdivia said of the contest. “It was a well-played game. (Sparks) was a different team than the first time we played them.”

Truckee won the first matchup at home 7-1 after falling behind 1-0, Valdivia said.

“Good game, but Truckee had very good ball control today,” Sparks coach Frank Avilla told the Sparks Daily Tribune. “We had to go back and work on our middle. They controlled that. We did better than in the first game, and we’ll do better the next time we face them.”

The Wolverines shut out Sparks 5-0 on the road Tuesday to improve to 5-0 in the Northern 3A Tahoe League and 12-2 overall.

“We are playing really great soccer and our passing is incredible,” said Truckee head coach Amy Valdivia.

Truckee junior Stephanie O’Neil scored two goals while Kelsi Decker, Kelsey Porter and Katie Dill each put in one.
