The Truckee Tahoe Swim Team will travel to Clovis next week to compete in this year’s Arena Western Zone Senior Championships.

The club will send six of its top swimmers to the meet where they will compete against the best swimmers from across the western United States for the long course meters, open-age championships. The meet will take place Aug. 1-5.

“The kids area going to have an opportunity to swim against athletes from all over,” Race Organizer Shawn Fleming said. “It’s a really great opportunity for the kids.”

The meet is one of the most prestigious for swimmers in the western United States, according to Fleming, with over 1,200 athletes expected to compete.

Truckee’s squad will be led by Truckee High School Class 3A Nevada state champion in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, Cooper De Ryk.

“He will be among the top-seeded swimmers at zones racing in the 100 free, 200 (individual medley), 200 free, and 100 back at Western Zones,” Head Coach Cyrus Crews said in an email to the Sierra Sun.

De Ryk, 17 years old, will then head to New York in early August to compete in the Speedo Junior National Championships.

The team will also have Incline High School’s Class 3A Nevada state champion Kate Rye, who took state titles in last May’s 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle.

The 16-year-old Rye will be a top-seeded swimmer in the 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter breaststroke, 200-meter individual medley, 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter breaststroke, and 100-meter butterfly, according to Crews.

Truckee High School swimmer Megan Burrill, age 16, will also be competing at the meet. Burrill was this year’s 100-yard butterfly Nevada state champion, and according to Crews, will come into the Western Zone meet as a top-seeded swimmer in the 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter butterfly, 50-meter freestyle, and 100-meter butterfly.

Also competing for the team is Kaikea Crews. The 14-year-old was this year’s Washington Open 100-yard backstroke champion, and will be competing in the 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter backstroke, 200-meter freestyle, 200-meter individual medley, 200-meter freestyle, 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter backstroke, and 100-meter butterfly.

Rounding out the team’s individual swimmers is 15-year-old Hunter Hoffman, who will be competing in the 100-meter freestyle, 50-meter freestyle, and 100-meter butterfly.

Truckee Tahoe Swim Team will also have 18-year-old Brandon Yong joining the squad from the University of the Pacific to swim in the men’s 400-meter medley relay and 400-meter freestyle relay along with De Ryk, Crews, and Hoffman. The team stands a good chance in both events, according to Crews, and are “aiming for the 2017 zones relay wins in both distances.”

Going forward the team will get back into short-course swimming with the High Country Age Group Championships in Minden, Nev. on Aug. 4-6.
