Truckee track and field: Shaffer leads Wolverines at Fernley Invite

Senior Vince Shaffer led the Truckee track and field team with a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash at the Fernley Invitational this past Saturday.
Shaffer posted a winning time of 53.43 seconds in the 400, which was fast enough to edge Fernley’s Tommy Merrill, who crossed the finish in 53.80.
Shaffer also was part of the boys relay team that captured first place in the 4×800 with a time of 8:20.08. Team members also included Tyler Brooks, Chris Gallagher and Tony Rodriguez. Fernley was runner-up in 8:36.02.
Truckee’s boys 4×400 team of the same members took fifth, its 4×200 team with Cory Ackerman, Nolan Fisher, Tyler Griffin and Mitch Nelson finished eighth and its 4×100 relay team of Ackerman, Griffin, Nelson and Cole Roberts was 10th.
Gallagher took sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:08.01, while Alex Kopytko was 12th and Rodriguez 17th. Salinger finished 15th in the 400 and 16th in the 200, while Fisher was 19th in the 200 and Griffin 18th in the 100.
Fisher was 14th in the long jump with a leap of 18-04.5, and Austin Griffin was 14th in the triple jump with a mark of 36-05.

On the girls’ side of the competition, Shauna Day took third place in the triple jump recording a leap of 32-02. Allison Young of Austin won the event with a jump of 32-06.
Truckee’s girls relay team finished runner-up to Sparks in the 4×200 relay, posting a time of 1:53.90 to the Railroaders’ 1:49.60. Truckee’s team was made up of Mikaela Arnstein, Serena Dill, Ali Haines and Hailey McCauley.
Arnstein, Day, Haines and McCauley teamed up to place third in the 4×100 relay with a time of 53.16, while the team of Mollie Askin, Heather Mort, Kayla Cole and Hanna Casares too fourth in the 800 and the team of Arnstein, Sammy Holoday, McCauley and Haines took sixth in the 4×400.
Gabby Garcia finished 10th in the 1,600-meter race (1-mile) with a time of 6:17.50. Casares was 12th in the same race (6:23.01), and Jennifer Gallagher 23rd (6:44.84).
Askin placed 12th in the 800 with a time of 2:48.75, and Mort was 16th (2:53.29). McCauley took 16th in the 400 in 1:10.66.
