Special to the Sun

The Truckee AYSO all-star teams traveled to Carson City this past weekend to play in an action-packed tournament with teams from all around the area and as far away as Bishop.

The two U10 boys teams played some great soccer and had a strong showing with a first- and second-place finish in their respective divisions.

The boys U10 Tornadoes, coached by Jamie Lyle and Pete Tankersley, finished second in the Cascade division and were anchored by a solid defense that allowed only four goals in four tournament games.

The defense consisted of Donivan Lopez in goal with Colton Morgan and Colby Delano as a very strong back line that showed speed, power and tenacity in shutting down opposing attacks and initiating the Tornadoes offense with their ability to control and feed the ball up to teammates in the midfield and front line.

The offense was generated with a strong passing game, which led to 16 tournament goals and was notable for its inspiring ball possession and relentless pressure.

With fast Aden Lyle and Ty Kirschner keeping opposing defenses on their heels, the slick ball control displayed in the midfield by Zek Kershaw, Fynn Tankersley, Allan Montoya-Zarate and Grant Bordner kept the middle ground safe and created many scoring opportunities.

In the exciting final match, won by Bishop, 1-0, the Tornadoes dominated time of possession and created the most scoring chances but couldn't find the back of the net against a very strong goalkeeper.

U10 Lightning

The boys U10 Lightning team brought a dominant style of play to the pitch and displayed the best all-around game of any team they faced.

Coached by Scott Sumner and Mark Tanner, the Lightning won the Sierra division with an outstanding defense that held opponents to two goals and constant offensive pressure with strong finishing to produce 18 goals.

The defense was led by Emiliano Morales as a wall in goal, with inspired back line play from Matt Tanner, Holden Woodruff, Kaio Martin and Ethan Raymore.

Their ability to shut down the opposition and effectively distribute the ball to initiate the Lightning threat was impressive.

The offense displayed speed, pressure and strong ball skills by Dylan Sumner, Aaron Gutierrez, Jason Martinez and Jonny Gomez. With an aggressive, relentless attacking style, Truckee's offense proved too much to handle for all opponents faced.

In the final match against Carson City, the tense game finally broke open with a beautiful strike from Jason Martinez, which led to a well-deserved 3-0 championship final win.

AYSO soccer is the largest all-volunteer organization in the North Tahoe-Truckee region and had over 730 kids playing this past season.
