Truckee volleyball finishes year with highest GPA in the state

A 3-2 loss in the semifinals of the Class 3A state tournament against eventual champion Boulder City wasn't the end Truckee's volleyball team had envisioned.

However, the girls accomplished plenty during an 18-13 campaign, including reaching the state playoffs for the 11th consecutive season, landing several players on all-league and all-state lists, and pulling off something few Truckee volleyball squads have done.

With a team GPA of 3.9 the Wolverines were named Class 3A state academic champions by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association. The Wolverines are also the highest in the entire state, according to Head Coach Erika Murphy, topping a field of 103 volleyball teams.

"I've got a lot of 4.0s on my team," Murphy said.

Aside from the classroom achievements, Truckee had several individual accolades. Senior outside hitter Madison Bromley and junior right side hitter Ryleigh Hogland were named first team all-state and first team all-league.

Sophomore middle blocker Kelly Cross stood out all year long, and on the heels of a strong postseason was named second team all-league.

"Probably the player that stepped up the most was Kelly Cross," said Murphy on the state semifinal game. "She served really well and played the net really aggressively."

Senior setter Jordan Brown was a leader on and off the floor as a team captain, and picked up second team all-league honors for her performance in leading the Wolverines offense.

Truckee senior middle hitter Emma Costa, senior utility Hayli Stewart, senior libero Mia Curtis, and senior defensive specialist Stephanie Randall were each named to the all-state honorable mention list.

Each of Truckee's six seniors picked up an all-league selection, leaving holes all over the court as the program moves ahead in search of a 12th straight state playoff appearance.

"I'm not to worried," Murphy said. "We have another active group at the junior varsity level. There are a lot of talented players that are coming up."

The Truckee junior varsity squad went 20-3 overall this year, and was 11-0 in league play.

"It will be a different system on the court next year," Murphy said. "Whatever team we get, we try to get the most out of it."
