Truckee wrestling: Wolverines surprise 4A

Sun Staff reports

Provided to the SunTruckee senior captain Bobby Waters put a beat-down on his South Tahoe opponent to help lead the Wolverines to a 48-33 win over the Vikings on Wednesday.

The Wolverines showed up to Wooster ready to wrestle Wednesday. It showed on the mat as Truckee routed the host team and South Tahoe by a combined score of 90-61.

“It feels good to start the season on a winning note,” said Truckee junior Ricky Cooper.

In the end the Wolverines outscored Wooster 42-28 and South Tahoe 48-33.

Against Wooster, Truckee captain Bobby Waters wasted little time viciously throwing his opponent to the mat. In clear control, Waters put his opponent to his back for a third time to finish him off with a pin in the first period.

Truckee’s dual against South Tahoe was not much different. Truckee junior Kyle Mullen started things off in the 140-pound class, taking down his opponent several times before pinning him in the first period.

After Waters and freshman Carlos Ramirez pinned their opponents, Truckee led 30-6 entering captain Dylan Crosby’s match. Crosby pinned his opponent in 19 seconds, giving the Wolverines a 30-point lead.

Cooper and freshman Steven Baker added two more pins for Truckee, which is entering Saturday’s Yerington Dual tournament with a 2-0 record and confidence on its side.

“We are looking to have a good fight this weekend,” Crosby said. “It’s just the beginning, and the two wins are just a stepping stone to the championships.”

Truckee’s JV squad led by freshmen Stein Retzlaff and Jose Vidaca beat Wooster 54-0 and South Tahoe 36-25. The JVs will compete in the Hug High School in a takedown tournament on Saturday.
