Truckee’s Fain, Young capture wins in Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs

How much tougher was the Tahoe Rim Trail 50-Mile Endurance Run than its 50-kilometer counterpart?

“A lot,” said Truckee’s Peter Fain. “I only puked nine times. It was rough.”

Despite struggling through bouts of sickness, however, Fain still reached the finish line first in the 50-mile run to capture the win with a time of 8 hours, 30 minutes, 27 seconds. He had previously won the 50K the past three years, and decided to take on the 50-mile distance after receiving a hard time from the race director following last year’s win.

Fain wasn’t the only Truckee resident to represent the region well, as Truckee triathlete and trail runner Julie Young took the women’s win and finished third overall in the 50K with a time of 5:24:47. Ben Kadiec won the 50K overall, posting a time of 5:11:25, while former Olympic biathlete Glenn Jobe of Sierraville finished sixth overall in 5:44:53.

Caroline Barichievich of South Lake Tahoe won the women’s 50-miler and placed eighth overall with a time of 9:54:58, while in the 100-mile race, Thomas Crawford shattered the course record with a time of 17:47:09 – finishing well ahead of runner-up Brett Rivers (18:53:37).

Also in the 100-miler, Truckee’s Gretchen Brugman finished fourth among women and 23rd overall in 28:19:25.

Rachael Woods, public relations manager at Alpine Meadows Ski Resort, took third place in the 50K women’s field, posting a 6:15:52, and Truckee’s Betsy Nye was the fourth woman (16th overall) in the same race, finishing in 6:32:50. Chris Luberecki of Tahoe City was 12th overall in the 50K with time of 10:16:12.

Athletes who raced the 50-mile and 100-mile distances learned the hard way about the difficulty of a re-routed section of course – one that added about 1,800 vertical feet to the two farthest runs.

“The new section was really hard,” Fain said. “I would say that it (the 50-miler) was much harder than the last one (the 50K), but the 100-mile guy broke the course record, so I feel a little demoralized by his performance.”

South Lake Tahoe ultrarunner Ron Nageotte, who raced the 50-miler, said the re-routed section gives new meaning to the race’s slogan, “A glimpse of heaven, a taste of hell.”

“There is a new taste of pure hell,” said Nageotte, who completed the run in 13:25:22. “It’s straight up. Some runners were going sideways and zigzagging; others were going backwards.”
