Truckee’s Nick Sterling, Kati Clark claim Sierra Crest Ultra Run 50K

Special to the Sun

TRUCKEE, Calif. — The Sierra Crest Ultra Run, a race between Truckee and Donner Summit, returned for a second year on Saturday, Aug. 6.

The course connects two different Nordic ski trail systems (Tahoe Donner and Auburn Ski Club), and is, fittingly, a fundraiser for Auburn Ski Club's Junior Biathlon and Nordic Programs.

In addition to taking advantage of the Donner Lake Rim Trail, the courses feature many hidden gems that double as Nordic ski trails in the winter.

As one racer said, "The course allowed us to run on beautiful trails with phenomenal views while providing changing terrain and rolling elevation changes that offered an amazingly fun challenge."

The race organizers were happy about the strong turnout of just under 200 people for the second running of the Sierra Crest. Once again they were excited to receive overwhelmingly positive feedback from racers.

Based on the event's strengths — a single-track-heavy, point-to-point course, incredible mountain vistas, and excellent trail marking and event organization — everyone involved expects to see the Sierra Crest 50K/30K continue to grow into a mainstay of Sierra Nevada ultra running.

30K RACE

Even though the 30K runners start an hour after the 50K runners, they are always the first ones through the finish line.

This year, the 30K was won by the same runner who won the Squaw Mountain Run, Arturo Arevalo from Chico State. He ran so fast that the aid station volunteers struggled to read his bib when he came through.

He is used to running the shorter cross-country running courses, but the distance didn't seem to faze him, as he won in 2 hours, 17 minutes, almost 15 minutes faster than last year's winner.

In second place was his former teammate at Chico and running partner Nick Spector, who has recently moved to Truckee, also competing in his first distance race.

In third place was Erik Stanley, who traveled with his running group all the way from Austin, Texas.

Dolores Bergmann of Chester, Calif., won the women's 30K race in a time of 3 hours, 5 minutes.

In second place, and only two minutes back, was Christina Mishica, a Donner Summit resident and a Nordic Ski Coach at Sugar Bowl Academy. In third place for the women was Robin Sanderson of Mill Valley, Calif.

50K RACE

The 50K race was exciting for the event's organizer, Auburn Ski Club. The first place male and female racers, respectively, were both former Auburn Ski Club Nordic Ski racers, Nick Sterling and Kati Clark.

They grew up ski racing with each other at ASC Training Center and have both moved back to Truckee. Clearly, their childhood training with Auburn Ski Club has paid off.

In second place for the men was a Truckee High cross-country runner, Hudson Verbeck. Hudson is only 17 and has never participated in such a long run. He looked strong crossing the finish line, though.

His time of 4 hours, 30 minutes placed him in the top three of the best finishes in the course's history.

In third place was Andy Starostka of Reno. In second place for the women was Reno's Molly Zurn while Katie Levine of Truckee came in third.
