A total of 517 runners and walkers participated Saturday in the 27th annual Squaw Valley Mountain Run ” a fundraiser for the Tahoe Forest Hospital’s cancer program and Auburn Ski Club’s Nordic programs.

As always, the event drew a competitive bunch of runners, both locally and from out of the area, as well as plenty who came out to support the cause at a more leisurely pace.

Whether walking or running, they all faced the same imposing route to the top: A 3.6-mile climb from the 6,200-foot base of the mountain to High Camp at 8,200 feet.

Galen Burrell of San Francisco, racing in the 25-29 age group, outdistanced a strong field of runners to capture the top spot in 29 minutes, 33 seconds ” 20 seconds off last year’s winning time of 29:13, set by Patrick Parsel of Davis. Burrell was followed by Drew Casselberry of Incline Village, who finished in 30:09, and Bill Raitter, who crossed the line in 30:43.

Thaddeus Reichley of Los Angeles placed fourth overall in 31:50 and Truckee’s Peter Fain rounded out the top-five with a time of 31:54.

Truckee’s Giovanna Mandy was the first women to cross the line, finishing 16th overall in 35:37. Sarah Raitter was second among women in 37:59 and Emma Garrard third in 38:07.

Once crossing the finish, participants were greeted with awards, a raffle, music, refreshments and beer.

Salomon awarded a pair of Salomon XA Pro 3D to the top three men and women finishers. Awards were also given for the top three places in each five-year age category.
