Wolverines edge past Whittell

Staff reports

It wasn’t pretty, said Hernan Valdivia, Truckee High’s boys soccer coach, but the Wolverines escaped nonetheless with a 3-2 win at Whittell on Tuesday.

“We were able to hang on to the victory, but it was kind of an ugly game,” Valdivia said. “The game was a lot closer than it should have been.”

Max Brixey, Emmanuel Sarabia and Scott Kelly each had a goal for the Wolverines, who led 3-1 at the half.

“We probably out-shot them 5-1,” Valdivia said. “We just couldn’t connect with enough shots. I’m just happy to get the win.”

A large, physical team, Valdivia said Whittell tried to impose a rough style of play, particularly in the second half.

“Play really started getting ugly,” he said.

At one point, Sarabia, who Valdivia said “had an incredible game,” collided with a Whittell defender while going up for a header. The collision opened a cut on Sarabia’s head, thus keeping him from playing much of the second half.

Truckee also received strong play from its midfielders, Valdivia said.

Whittell’s first goal came on “a mental breakdown (from the Wolverines) on defense,” Valdivia said, and “the second goal came on a similar mistake,” with a Truckee defender tripping over his own feet near the goal.

“Our goal is to not lose a game in league, but I don’t think we’ll be able to take anyone by surprise this year,” Valdivia said.

The Wolverines play at Yerington Saturday at 1 p.m. Truckee will host Sparks next Tuesday at 5 p.m.
