World Cup racing | Sullivan, Ganong top 10 in final downhill

Staff and U.S. Ski Team report

MERIBEL, France — In the final World Cup downhill of the season, Steven Nyman was the top American with a fourth-place finish, while Squaw Valley skiers Marco Sullivan and Travis Ganong placed eighth and ninth, respectively. Ted Ligety was 24th.

Kjetil Jansrud of Norway won the race to secure the downhill crystal globe. Marcel Hirscher of Austria took the World Cup overall title after winning the final slalom on Sunday. Hirscher also won the giant slalom title.

The downhill title came down to Jansrud and Hannes Reichelt of Austria, with Jansurd required to finish ahead of Reichelt to ensure the globe. Reichelt was 10th to finish second in the downhill standings.

Ganong, who recorded his first World Cup win this season, finished 11th in the downhill standings. Sullivan was 19th.

Nyman, who missed the podium by .26 seconds, finished sixth in the downhill standings, his career-best result.

“Consistency was my main goal and I was pretty consistent this year,” said Nyman, who has been plagued by injuries and crashes in past seasons. “To end like this, I’m really happy with it. Hopefully I can carry it into next year. I started outside the 30 this year so my main goal is to get in with the top guys and really push for a title next year.”

Truckee High grad Tim Jitloff, meanwhile, capped his season with a 19th-place finish in the GS. He finished 17th in the GS standings.
