Wrestlers come out of duels strong, eye regionals

Matt Riddle

The THS wrestling team headed to Yerington last weekend to compete in divisional duels at host Right of Passage’s grounds. Every Northern 3A school was there to compete for the weekend. Every school competed against every school, as the weekend is so the schools can get the duels out of the way.

“It’s a tough weekend, because you wrestle everybody,” coach Ron Curtis said.

Instead of a tournament style win where you advance onto your next match, every team takes a swipe at all of the other teams.

As a team, Truckee didn’t fair so well, losing six of the seven duels, beating only Bishop Manogue, 48 points to the Miners’ 30.

Marcus Waters went 6-1 at 152 lbs. only losing in the finals. He gets the second seed in regionals, which start Friday.

Buck Claesson at 112 lbs. also went 6-1, losing in the finals and taking a second seed in regionals. However, Claesson is going to compete at 119 lbs. instead of 112 lbs.

“Buck has a good chance of making it to State,” Curtis said.

Daniel Ballou at 171 lbs. went 5-2 and will take a third seed in regionals.

“He should have been second, but he made a mistake against the Dayton kid,” Curtis said.

Shane Wright at 160 lbs. went 3-4 edging into the regionals with a fifth seed in arguably the most competitive weight class. His toughest match is the state favorite from Spring Creek.

“He still hasn’t beaten that kid, but there are a lot of tough kids in that division,” Curtis said. “Shane can do well. It’s real tough for him, but he has an opportunity to qualify (for State).”

Nathan Ran went 3-2 at 145 lbs. and will take a fifth seed. “Ran has an excellent chance,” Curtis said. “He just came out late in the season.”

Ran lost a couple of his matches because he lost his wind.

Steve Thorne at 140 lbs. came up from the jayvee to replace Rick Saucer, due to illness, and finished at 1-6, getting a sixth seed for regionals. Saucer, although well, won’t be able to make regionals because of a bad ankle sprain suffered in practice on Tuesday.

Brandon App competing at 189 lbs. despite really weighing 170 lbs. went 1-5 and will compete seventh.

And last but not least, Chris Hobbart at heavyweight took his first win of the season over a Bishop Manogue wrestler, finishing the weekend 1-6 and a seventh seed for regionals.

For regionals, Claesson, Ran, Waters, Wright and Ballou all stand good chances of making it into the State tournament. A wrestler only needs to make it into the top five of his weight division to earn a birth.

“A couple of them are going to have some tough matches,” Curtis said. “Shane will have nothing but tough matches, it’s so competitive in there.”

The regional tournament will be held by Lowry in Winnemucca. The matches get started around 9 a.m. on Friday.
