Youth club mountain bike team forming in Truckee
July 20, 2015
An informational meeting for students and parents interested in forming a co-ed junior high/high school mountain bike club will take place at the Zano's Family Italian & Pizzeria in Truckee on Monday, July 27, at 6 p.m.
Student-athletes from grades 6 through 12 and interested parents or mountain bike enthusiasts are invited to attend. The purpose of the meeting is to find students interested in participating in club mountain biking and begin development of middle and high school programs to participate in the Nevada Interscholastic Cycling League's programs and four-race fall mountain bike series, set to launch next summer.
"We'll organize some introductory events for this fall, including group rides and skills clinics to raise the stoke level about mountain biking as a school sport," said Ryan Solberg, the event organizer. "There will be no tryouts. Coaches will work with all athletes to improve their skills and endurance. Parents and community members are also welcome to join as team volunteers and ride leaders."
Doug Bedient, founding chair and league director for the Nevada Interscholastic Cycling League, will also be in attendance to assist in answering any questions.
"Interscholastic mountain bike racing has really caught on," Bedient said. "More than any other sport I've been involved with, everyone can enjoy mountain biking. As an interscholastic sport, no one gets cut or benched — all riders contribute to the success of the team. Biking can change the lives of our youth in so many ways and it's a sport they can enjoy their entire life. Parents become coaches and end up getting back on bikes too. It's a great family activity."
The Nevada League is one of 15 statewide mountain bike racing leagues operating under the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). Based in Berkeley, NICA provides resources and guidance to guide the development of middle and high school mountain bike racing across the United States.
