Stever, Jack Van Tuyl

On Dec. 20, Jack Van Tuyl Stever, 86, passed away in Truckee. Jack was born May 27, 1920, in New York. After high school, Jack served in the United States Army as a chemical warfare specialist. He came to Truckee in the early 1950s. After graduation from the University of Nevada, Jack began his career as a teacher at Truckee Elementary School.

Jack retired from service as a teacher and spent many years fishing in the local rivers and lakes which he loved. His greatest loves in life, however, were the young people he served as a teacher. Jack made sincere efforts to stay in touch with his students and enjoyed their many accomplishments. He spent his final years at Tahoe Forest Hospital Extended Care where he was happy, safe and warm, and perfected his gift for storytelling.

Jack was a kind and generous friend to many. Along with his many acts of kindness and his many accomplishments, he will be remembered most for his simple ordinary humanity and decency. Jack is survived by many admiring colleagues and former students who reflect on a quote from Henry Adams: “A teacher effects eternity; no one can tell where his influence stops.”
